So you want to be warm this winter… and you’ve heard parkas are warm even in arctic temperatures… but what is a parka? Originally, parkas were worn by the Inuit and other Arctic peoples. The traditional parka design is actually “a pullover style outer garment made from caribou skin with a fur lining around the hood”. The idea being that if animals could stay warm, humans could wear their skins and stay warm also, even in the most inhospitable conditions.
The modern parka jacket is made from synthetic materials and zips up the front for closure. Down filled parkas are currently the norm, but synthetic fills can also be very warm and more animal friendly for you vegans out there. Essentially, modern parka jacket design has remained the same with the exception of the front closure, and the use of breathable, fast-wicking synthetic materials. Inuit people now rarely wear traditional caribou skin parkas in favor of the modern equivalent.
It can be a bit confusing to navigate the wide range of parka jackets that have adopted the name “parka”, and we here at the Parka Jacket Warehouse want to offer you the full range of parkas, so you are going to see a lot of different styles on our website. Parka has been adopted by companies like North Face and Bugaboo (and others) to basically mean “really warm jacket with a hood!”. However, if it’s a true parka you want, it simply doesn’t get any better than the Canada Goose Expedition Parka, our #1 arctic parka, developed for Antarctic scientific expeditions. Originally being from Canada myself, and having endured many minus thirty degree winter days, there just isn’t another jacket I would ever want hanging in my closet for cold days.
So, what kid of parka jackets do we recommend? And which companies make the best quality products? Ok. Here’s a quick overview of our top 5 arctic parka jackets to get you started:
